Bomb disposal robot opens defense facility

Leighs Construction recently completed the construction of the Emergency Ordinance Disposal (EOD) defense facility at Wigram Military Base in Canterbury for the New Zealand Defence Force.  This facility was officially opened during a recent military ceremony with the ribbon skillfully cut by a bomb disposal robot.

This project is the first of a nationwide installation of EOD team facilities throughout the country. The EOD team, who specalise in bomb disposal, has been formed after a recent Government initiative and is staffed by the three arms of the Defence Force (Army, Navy and Airforce).  They also work closely with other services such as police and customs in dealing with ordinance disposal.

This substantial and complex project on a greenfields site involved the construction of a facility which includes workshops, offices, training rooms, secure rooms and a small residence area as staff are on site 24 hours per day.  The facility is located within a secure compound.

During the opening ceremony, Leighs Construction was presented with a Certificate of Appreciation by the New Zealand Defence Force. The Commanding Officer praised the professional and high quality delivery of this project by Leighs Construction.
