Landcare Insect Quarantine Facility
The most expensive building – per square metre – ever built by Leighs Construction, Landcare's Insect Quarantine facility was a high-specification building, being fully pressurised with a temperature-controlled environment. The MAF-regulated scientific research facility incorporated a multitude of environmentally sustainable design elements.
The facility is used to breed insects brought into New Zealand with the purpose of release for pest control. The facility has a number of small rooms where each species is bred in a controlled environment to monitor its growth, development and potential impact on native flora and fauna in advance of a decision being made to release it into the wild.
